Approach

KDI recognizes that participatory planning and design are key to equitable and sustainable development.

Every KDI project starts with residents and their vision for the community. To realize this vision, we work collaboratively with local people and other stakeholders from project conception through implementation to build on local ideas, enhance them with technical knowledge and design innovation, and connect them to extant resources.

Through a 5-phase, community-driven process, KDI helps residents transform their neighborhoods and grow their long term capacity to enhance and protect their environment, expand economic resilience, and build social cohesion.

KDI has been recognized for its innovative approach to poverty alleviation by notable institutions such as The Rockefeller Foundation, The Renewal Project, Ashoka Changemakers, American Express, Annenberg Alchemy, Smithsonian Institute, UN Habitat, and Echoing Green.
