Why

In spring 2012, KDI selected a proposal from a pool of applicants in a Kibera-wide “Request for Proposal” process to build a new site at the border between the Lindi and Laini Saba villages. This proposal, submitted by community-based group Slum Care, highlighted challenges such as flooding, youth unemployment, trash, pollution and insecurity.

What

A multifunctional community building and a play area were constructed with a bridge between them, improving an existing access path. The community building is home to a baby care facility run by Ndovu Development Group and a youth group run by Usalama Bridge Youth Reform, while Slum Care runs a sanitation block with four toilets and two showers. KPSP04 opened in April 2013.

How

Extensive community design workshops began in July 2012, during which KDI helped local residents form Ndovu and Usalama, two new community groups.

Together the groups led a community clean-up to kick-start the project in September 2012. Before construction began, gabions (wire cages filled with rocks) were installed to stabilize the building site and prevent flooding.

Today

Slum Care, Ndovu and Usalama have continued to develop new phases of the project. Just recently they agreed on a new name for the site that would represent their continued partnership: The SUN Center.
