Why

KDI’s seventh site in Kibera was proposed by Lindi Village residents in June 2014.  Initial proposals from the Kibera United For Our Needs (KUFON) community group included various income-generating ventures, sanitation services, and training programs for local youth to address the development challenges around the site.

What

Through workshops in 2014 and 2015 the proposed initiatives were developed and fine-tuned, giving rise to plans for the construction of a sanitation facility, a public laundry facility, a play area for neighborhood children, a pavilion for public performances, and a small business kiosk.

How

As part of the extensive participatory design process KDI and KUFON set up management structures and financial systems, with input from previous KPSP partners, to enable the community to operate the planned public facilities.

To protect the site from seasonal flooding, a stone-filled gabion wall and a planted retaining wall were installed before site construction began.

Today

A pedestrian bridge added to the site in 2015 was formally approved and adopted by the Nairobi City County, who also installed a public lighting system in the site in 2017.
