2015 - 2017
The eighth site in the Kibera Public Space Project network, Anwa Junior Academy, is a primary school located in Lindi Village. The project resulted from clear identification of the need for improved learning facilities in Kibera as a fundamental component of sustainable development.
Completed in 2017, the project comprises classrooms that provide improved daylight, ventilation, and acoustics for engaged learning; new toilet facilities for students, visitors and staff; and a new staff room and living quarters to accommodate on-site staff. The 400m2 site is home to 400 students ranging from 2 to 14 years of age.
In July 2015 KDI began consulting with the school community to identify the structures, amenities, and infrastructure that would fulfil their aspirations for the school. Future adaptability, earthen construction techniques, and references to local Kiberan informal architecture are all integrated into the design features of the school.
A critical step was engaging an education partner that specializes in informal schools to help develop the capacity and skills of the teaching staff, as well as improve the learning environment and curriculum.
KDI is currently working on developing an outdoor reception and recreation area with surfaces for interactive play, and a sustainable urban drainage system to reuse rainwater and reduce off-site flows.
The Carpentry Academy associated with the project has been very effective in engaging local youths in the school development process as well as improving income and job prospects in the wider community.
