Lengina Water Project

Lengina Water Project

Overview

KDI started working with the Lengina community in Narok South in 2013, after being introduced by Mandy Senhen and Beth Fisher, long-time collaborators with KDI and friends of community leaders Julius and Jonathon Mpusia. The community had requested assistance in providing a clean water source on the school grounds for its 500 pupils. The pre-existing water source was a polluted river located 15km away – local women would spend hours walking there and back each day.

In 2013, with support from the Ministry of Water, the Lengina School, and the wider Olkiriaine community, KDI convened a water management committee to develop and implement the project. A hydrogeological survey was procured to choose a location for a borehole. With the support of a volunteer from Engineers Without Borders UK/RedR, KDI oversaw the borehole drilling to 250m, the borehole equipment, and the construction and fitting of a generator and pump house.

Since the system was installed in 2013, KDI has helped fine-tune the system and install the pipe network. The water source supplies the school buildings and a sanitation block via four tap stands. The community and local government funded 25% of the capital cost of the project via a CDF grant.
