2017 - 2018
KDI is partnering with Engineers Without Borders UK throughout 2017 and 2018 to support the Engineering for People Design Challenge, an award-winning initiative. The Design Challenge is embedded in undergraduate engineering courses and gives students the opportunity to learn and practice the ethical, environmental, social and cultural aspects of engineering design. Since 2011 the Engineering for People Design Challenge has improved the skills and competencies of over 23,000 undergraduates.
In the 2017/2018 edition, students will research design challenges facing Kibera in the areas of water access and quality, sanitation, clean and affordable energy, waste disposal, built environment, transportation solutions and digital infrastructure. They will then advance design solutions that take into account social, environmental and economic factors, which will be assessed by EWB-UK, KDI and invited partners.
Each year, the best teams from all participating universities are invited to the Grand Final where they showcase their ideas to peers, industry representatives and a panel of expert judges, and compete to be crowned Engineering for People Design Challenge winners.
