2015 - 2017
The City of Los Angeles has approximately 2,000 vacant lots in its inventory. These lots are underutilized and in many cases have become magnets for crime, illegal dumping, and general nuisance in the city. At the same time, many of the communities where these lots are located lack access to public spaces, parks, and other basic community amenities.
Free Lots is a partnership between Leadership for Urban Renewal Network (LURN), LA Neighborhood Land Trust, TRUST South LA, Community Health Councils, Esperanza Community Housing and KDI, that aims to create a pathway for residents and neighborhood groups to access to these city-owned vacant lots.
After a year of transforming lots around the city to demonstrate the endless potential of vacant lot reuse, the Free Lots Coalition is working with the city to launch a pilot Adopt-a-Lot program. This will allow residents to adopt specific city-owned vacant lots for 3-12 months at a time.
We expect the pilot program to begin in mid-2018.
