In recent years, cities across Southern California have been re-examining their roadways and seeking strategies to make them less automobile-centric. Across the region, local governments have been making strides in shifting focus away from car convenience to include more holistic strategies such as creating better access to transit, building better pedestrian facilities, and improving travel choices.

SCAG, the Southern California Association of Governments, is a coaltion of governments responsible for a variety of planning and policy initiatives to encourage a more sustainable Southern California. The SCAG region encompasses six counties (Imperial, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardinim and Ventura) and 191 cities in an area covering more than 38,000 square miles. Beginning in fall of 2015, SCAG began implementing a safety and encouragement campaign called Go Human, which is meant to promote safe walking and bicycling while also reminding drivers to pay attention to pedestrians and bicylists. In addition to this adversiting campaign, SCAG commissioned a series of events in partnership with local communities in each of the six counties beginning in May 2016, in conjunction with Bike Month.

As part of a consultant team comprised of Estolano LeSar Perez Advisors, Community Arts Resources, Investing in Place, and Designed by Colleen, KDI is working with local cities to design and implement a series of events that include open street gatherings and demonstration projects, or "pop-ups". These pop-ups are designed to allow residents to envision and temporarily experience roadways that are designed for people and not just cars. These events will also create opportunities for residents to provide input and improve the quality of life in their neighborhoods. KDI's primary role has been to lead the tactical urban ism design approach to help each city creatively imagine interventions such as cycletracks, bike lanes, improved pedestrian crosswalks and bulbouts, parklets, and mini-plazas. KDI collaborated with the LA-based Matt Gagnon Studio on the design and fabrication of unconventional street furnishings.
