Kibera Urban Agriculture Study

Overview

Challenges such as lack of space, lack of arable land and high population density have prevented urban agriculture from flourishing as a pre-eminent means of providing food to the urban poor. In light of this, KDI once again teamed up with the Kibera Action Group Organization (KAGO), partners on KPSP05, to launch a project in 2014 that would investigate the most feasible forms of urban agriculture for communities in Kibera. Supported by Welthungerhilfe, this project explored the potential of urban agriculture in Kibera and other informal settlements through both research and practical components.

An urban agriculture pilot project was implemented at KPSP05, fulfilling a long-held desire for members of KAGO. As part of this project, the KAGO agriculture committee grew different crops using sack gardens, hydroponic growing troughs, hanging gardens, and raised moist beds: methods which maximize the amount of space and allow crops to be grown away from polluted environments.
