2013 - 2013
KPSP02 is KDI’s second project site in Kibera. It sits along the river that runs through the settlement and is a fifteen-minute walk upstream from KPSP01. When KDI first met residents at the KPSP02 site, the area was subject to serious flooding and erosion and was primarily used for waste disposal.
KPSP02 was a complex project because the site was much smaller, giving us far less space to work with. Nonetheless, the multifunctional buildings developed in the space include a public sanitation center, a set of kiosks for small businesses, and a playground.
Community members who participated in the project formed The Riverside Usafi Group (RUG) in order to provide site maintenance.
KPSP02 was created through KDI’s 5-phase community design process. The sanitation center was constructed from soil-stabilized bricks, which local community members were trained to manufacture and sell to the project. Both the sanitation center and the kiosks provide revenue for ongoing site maintenance.
In 2013 RUG invested in an additional water storage tank to grow their water sales revenue and ensure that the project continues to thrive.
