2011 - 2011
Like many trailer communities, residents of St. Anthony faced a lack of access to quality water and sanitation, healthy food, outdoor space for gatherings and recreation, and transport infrastructure. KDI’s first US project was located at St. Anthony, a trailer park in the Eastern Coachella Valley that is home to about 100 families.
St. Anthony contains a playground; a shaded pavilion for entrepreneurial activities, community meetings, and communal meals; a stage that also functions as a skate ramp; and a community garden to enable the cultivation of healthy food. To accompany physical site improvements, KDI also provided gardening and nutrition classes, small business training, and arts workshops to residents.
In 2011, KDI partnered with Pueblo Unido Community Development Corporation to discover the residents’ priorities for St. Anthony through a series of community workshops. Following a participatory design and building process, the flooded waste space in the center of the trailer park was transformed into a much-needed community area.
The park is currently owned and managed by Pueblo Unido Community Development Corporation.
