Why

KPSP03 is located in the Gatwekera Village of Kibera on the Ngong River. The site was selected from a pool of applicants to a Kibera-wide “Request for Proposal” process. The local residents’ proposal identified challenges such as frequent flooding and the fact that several drainage channels and latrines flowed into the area. However, the existing pedestrian bridge meant that there was a lot of potential for activating the site.

What

The project was completed in 2012 and included a poultry farm, a community center with a school and a health clinic, a playground, and kiosks for business owners. Flood control and an enhanced drainage system were also installed.

Artist Helen Lessick collaborated with local sign painters to create colorful plaques that provided information on community health, ecology, and the relationship between soil and food production.

How

During the summer of 2011, the KDI Kenya team conducted numerous community workshops with residents and partners to prioritize needs, create design solutions, and explore micro-enterprise opportunities at the site.

The community center was constructed using soil-stabilized bricks, which, expanding an economic program from KPSP02, local community members were trained to manufacture and sell to the project.

Today

Operational from 2012, the KPSP03 site was well used by residents, particularly the laundry pad and school building. Sadly, the main structures in the project were removed in 2016 to make way for a new main sewer line. KDI is in conversation with the community about rebuilding some of the former site components in order to restore it as a “Productive Public Space”.
